Aero Fighters 3 (originally Sonic Wings 3) is a vertical-scrolling shooter masterpiece that feels right at home in the ACA NEOGEO library. As an expert on the genre, I was thrilled to see how well the mobile port handles the chaotic action. The game features 10 unique teams, ranging from WWII-era planes to high-tech jets and even a ninja flying a giant robotic fish. This variety isn't just cosmetic; each craft has vastly different shot patterns and 'Ninja Attacks' that drastically change your strategy.

The branching stage system is a highlight, offering significant replayability as you hunt for all the different endings. SNK and Hamster have done a great job with the touch implementation, though I highly recommend using a Bluetooth controller for higher difficulty levels where pixel-perfect precision is required. The inclusion of online rankings allows you to test your 'High Score' mettle against the best pilots in the world, capturing that competitive arcade spirit perfectly.

Aero Fighters 3 is a piece of history, for better or worse. It’s a Video System classic from '95, and the porting job by Hamster is technically sound. You get the same planes, the same weird cast, and the same unforgiving difficulty. The problem is that a SHMUP this frantic was never meant to be played with a thumb on a piece of glass. The virtual pad is customizable, yes, but it lacks the tactile precision required for 'bullet hell' adjacent moments.

The branching paths and diverse teams give it more longevity than your average arcade shooter, but it’s a relic. If you’re a purist who remembers dropping quarters into this machine, the $3.99 entry fee is a bargain. For a modern mobile gamer, the dated visuals and brutal difficulty curve will likely be a turn-off. It’s a good port of a decent game, but it doesn't do enough to justify its existence on a phone beyond pure nostalgia.
