Albert is an absolute masterpiece of mobile game design. It tells the story of a day in the life of a quirky character named Albert through a series of mini-games, but what sets it apart is the 'paper craft' art style. Everything looks like it was cut out of paper and cardboard, giving it a tangible, handmade feel that is incredibly rare in digital games.
The mini-games utilize every feature of the iPhone—tilting, multi-touch, and even the microphone. One moment you're tilting to help Albert balance on a bike, and the next you're blowing into the mic to help him make bubbles. It’s charming, clever, and endlessly creative. It feels less like a game and more like a piece of interactive art that also happens to be a lot of fun to play.
Albert is the kind of game that reminds you mobile devices can be more than just slot machines. The paper-craft art style is genuinely beautiful and carries a level of artisanal charm that is missing from 99% of the App Store. The mini-games themselves are clever, utilizing the gyroscope and touch in ways that feel integrated rather than gimmicky.
However, my conservative side has to point out the lack of longevity. Twenty mini-games might sound like a lot, but you can breeze through the entire thing in less than an hour. Once the visual novelty wears off, there isn't much depth to the gameplay mechanics. It’s more of an interactive art piece than a robust gaming experience. High marks for style, but it needs more meat on the bones.
Performance: Flawless performance; sensors are well-calibrated.
Buy if: You value artistic presentation and creative mini-games over long-term progression.
Skip if: You want a game that will keep you occupied for weeks.
