Avignon: A Clash of Popes is one of the most clever 'micro-games' Iβve ever played. The tug-of-war mechanic is deceptively simple but leads to incredibly deep strategic choices. Every time you pull a card toward your side, you have to weigh the immediate benefit of that card's power against the fact that you might be clearing a path for your opponent to nab a game-winning character.
The digital adaptation is flawless, making the 14th-century political struggle feel fast and modern. A game takes less than ten minutes, which makes it my go-to choice for a quick mental workout. The AI is surprisingly tough, and the 'pass-and-play' mode is a fantastic way to introduce friends to the board game without having to set up a physical deck. Itβs a must-own for anyone who loves high-stakes strategy in a small package.
Dinsun here. I enjoy historical themes, and the 'Western Schism' is a fascinating, if niche, setting. This is a very 'pure' strategy game. Itβs all about a shared row of cards and the tug-of-war to get them into your congregation.
The digital port is solid, keeping the board readable and the turns snappy. It's essentially a game of positioning. Every move matters, and a single mistake can hand your opponent the win. Itβs a bit dry visuallyβit looks like a digitized tabletop game, which it isβbut the depth is there. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it doesn't need them. It's smart, and I respect that.

Choose from two actions on your turn: Push, Pull, Petition, or Excommunicate. Your goal is to move characters from the central 'Map' into your 'Congregation.' Be carefulβmoving a card closer to you often pushes another card closer to your opponent.
Reviews and strategies for the physical version.
Each card has a unique power that activates when it's in the Map or your Congregation. For example, the Cardinal can pull another card with him, while the Inquisitor can remove an opponent's card. Mastering these interactions is the key to winning in just a few turns.
You win by either collecting three characters of the same type, or by being the first to reach a total of six characters in your congregation.
