As a 40-year-old gamer who remembers the indie horror boom, Bendy and the Dark Revival has always occupied an interesting space. Bringing a full-fledged first-person survival horror title to iOS is an ambitious undertaking, and visually, the game translates surprisingly well. The 1930s rubber-hose animation style mixed with grotesque ink monsters creates a wonderfully creepy, oppressive atmosphere that pulls you right into its haunted studio corridors.
However, survival horror lives and dies by its responsiveness during tense encounters. Trying to manage stealth, melee combat, and puzzle solving using virtual touch-screen sticks on a phone glass screen is an exercise in frustration. You'll frequently fumble your inputs when a ink demon comes charging around the corner. If you pair it with a compatible Bluetooth controller, the experience elevates significantly. Without one, the control friction holds back what is otherwise a genuinely spooky and atmospheric horror trip.
