94/100

Cassette Beasts is nothing short of a masterpiece in the monster-collecting RPG genre. While clearly inspired by classic Pokémon titles, Bytten Studio improves upon the formula in almost every conceivable way. The cassette tape aesthetic, synth-pop soundtrack, and mature yet whimsical storyline give New Wirral an unforgettable identity.

The mechanics are insanely deep. Instead of simple rock-paper-scissors effectiveness, the elemental chemistry system dynamically changes target statuses, altering battle dynamics in creative ways. Add in the mind-boggling Fusion system—which allows literally any two monsters to merge—and you have one of the finest indie RPGs brought to mobile devices.

Dinsun Review

Let's be honest: the creature-collection RPG genre has felt stagnant for decades, resting comfortably on nostalgia while refusing to evolve. Cassette Beasts arrives like a breath of fresh air, respecting the roots established by classic monster battlers while completely reinventing the mechanics. Transforming into monsters using cassette tapes rather than trapping them in balls is a fantastic concept, and the fusion system—allowing you to combine any two creatures into unique hybrid powerhouses—adds incredible tactical depth. At 40, I rarely find indie RPGs that genuinely hook me from start to finish, but the clever type interactions, open-world exploration, and sharp writing kept me glued to the screen.

The soundtrack is an absolute banger, blending retro synth-pop vibes with modern punch that elevates every encounter. Exploration abilities tied to your monster transformations make traversing the island feel rewarding rather than tedious chorework. While touch controls on mobile require some getting used to compared to a physical controller, the core experience is so remarkably polished and imaginative that it easily earns high praise from a cynical old gamer like me. If you love deep tactical RPGs, this is an essential purchase.
