The Chess Opening Analyzer is an indispensable tool for any chess player looking to improve their early-game theory. It’s less of a game and more of a high-end educational coach. The ability to visualize the 'tree' of possible moves and see the engine evaluation for each one helps demystify why certain openings are preferred at the Grandmaster level.
The interface is clean and doesn't get in the way of the data. I particularly appreciated the 'Database' feature, which shows how often specific moves are played in real tournaments and what the resulting win/loss ratios are. It’s a focused, professional tool that can take your preparation from amateur to academic if you put in the time to study the lines.
Dinsun here. I appreciate the utility of a tool like this, but let’s be honest: in 2026, if you aren't integrating with Lichess or Chess.com, you're making life difficult for the user. The interface is functional, but it feels like software from fifteen years ago. It does exactly what it says—it analyzes openings—but the data presentation is dry and lacks the intuitive heatmaps or tree-views found in more modern apps.
For a veteran player who just wants a simple database on their phone, it works. However, the lack of a built-in engine for deeper on-the-fly analysis (at least a modern Stockfish version) is a notable omission. It’s a specialized tool for a specific audience, and while it isn't 'bad,' it’s certainly not essential. It’s the kind of app you use once, realize you can do the same thing better on a web browser, and then forget about.
Performance: Fast database queries; very low battery consumption.
Buy if: You are a competitive chess player looking for a standalone offline opening reference.
Skip if: You already use Chess.com or Lichess and expect modern UI/UX standards.
