Descenders is a proper game, which is a breath of fresh air on the App Store. It’s a port of a console title, and it shows in the depth of the physics and the complexity of the levels. The sense of speed is genuine—actually a bit terrifying at times. I like the roguelike structure; it adds a layer of consequence that most mobile racers lack. You have to decide if that extra backflip is worth the risk of losing a life.
However, the mobile port has its issues. The graphics have been significantly dialed back, and on anything but the latest hardware, it can look a bit muddy. The touch controls are surprisingly decent, but this is a game that practically screams for a physical controller. It’s a conservative, skill-based title that doesn't hold your hand. If you want a real extreme sports game and have a controller, this is one of the best options available.
