Where is the sequel?!
Thu Dec 18 2014 ms_fixitThis game was recommended to me by my boyfriend after he noticed it on Apps Gone Free. He knows I love a good mystery game so he thought it'd be a win. I was a little more reluctant. I've only ever truly enjoyed one mobile game (A Dark Room for those wondering) so I wasn't sold on this one yet. But upon starting up the app and seeing how incredibly detailed it was, my heart began to sway.
You play as Detective Grimoire investigating a murder at a quite unusual tourist attraction. You meet several quirky characters all voiced exceptionally well. The game also features a few mini games and you are investigating and piecing clues together. It didn't feel like I was being led to a conclusion... It felt as if I was coming to it myself.
The game's overall artistic style works wonderfully with its dark humor. I wish I had the opportunity to play a longer version on a different platform (PC, console, etc.) but I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes an old fashioned mystery with a twist. This will certainly inspire the detective in you.
Another good mystery
Sat Feb 17 2024 NonseqI played Tangle Tower and downloaded this game as soon as I saw it. The art and style is a bit more bright and pops a bit more, with some parts of the interface more intuitive, or perhaps having played Tangle Tower I now knew at the start you could talk to witnesses/suspects about clues and other characters.
The voice acting and story aren't quite as good as in Tangle Tower, which also had more potential motives and explanations as you learn about the house and its inhabitants. you move toward the final reveal. I also miss the banter between two detectives, and there is a character in this one that reminds me way too much of that child in The Secret of Kells and also serves mainly as a story accelerator. Finally, I prefer the map navigation of the first game.
Overall, however, this is still a fun game and a recommended purchase. I hope they bring us another in the future, as long as they avoid shortcuts and invest in an engrossing story and good writing.
Desperate for a Sequel!!!!
Thu Oct 20 2016 FbjbxfbchThis game is FANTASTIC. I love murder mysteries, but as someone who is easily upset by gore there's not a lot of mystery games out there for me. Detective Grimoire is the perfect balance of eerie, funny, spooky, and mysterious, and is absolutely addictive. The art is beautiful, the music is perfectly fitting, and the voice acting is absolutely PHENOMENAL--undeniably the best I've ever heard on any mobile game. The way you come to conclusions makes you feel like you're really truly solving the case yourself, unlike most games like this which holds your hand the whole time and guides you to a conclusion. The characters are realistic and three dimensional, the mini games are incredibly fun, and the story is ridiculously engrossing. This is one of my all time favorite mobile games and I'm practically BEGGING for a sequel!!!!!
What a surprisingly good game!
Sun May 31 2015 Bill FurgesonThis game is good. I like it a lot. I played it a while back and now I stopped playing it. I had a great experience playing this game. The story of the game is great and you really feel like you are in the game as a detective, searching clues in a swamp because of the murder. The thing that really surprised me and was the best feature of the game is that every character is fully voice acted and the people who did the voice acting did a good job. It made the experience way better. It is very rare for a mobile game to have voice acting! It really blew my mind! I also like that it there was also cutscenes too. One thing wrong with the game was that the game was too short. I had 100% completion in one play through and it was at least 2-3 hours. So, yeah an overall great game. Also, please create a sequel to Detective Grimoire, Armor Games! I want to see what the new one could offer by its story and new characters!
Awesome, but Crashes a Lot
Sun Dec 08 2019 AwesomeNick94Loved the flash original and now this Detective Grimoire! Awesome characters, writing and overall mystery. They’ve got a great framework for a detective game that keeps it from ever getting tedious. Can’t wait to start Tangle Tower!
Unfortunately though for this title, it crashed multiple times on my iPhone 7 running the latest version of iOS 13, most often upon tapping the question mark in the top right. It was also a little frustrating to find an item I was missing from outside the office, as it didn’t seem like there was much telegraphing it was there, and I felt that I had already searched it thoroughly. Also it ends kind of abruptly, though not as abruptly as the flash game, at least. There was some weird reluctant dialogue from Grimoire that didn’t make any sense to me.
Still loved the experience overall though, and highly recommend it of course!
Overall Great Game
Thu Jan 23 2014 kittylover456There are some things I wish they would've added one of them being more puzzles I think there were only two "puzzles" in the game and they extremely easy. But the game was great without them and I wouldn't of felt like there was something lacking if they hadn't put any puzzles in at all. I loved the art of the characters and the overall simplicity of the game. It wasn't very hard to go through the challenges and to find out the killer in the game but the gameplay was so fun that the simplicity was sort of enjoyed its not the game that your gonna be scratching your head over. I really liked the game and I would definitely recommend it.
Very Cute
Wed Mar 17 2021 NcadminIt’s a very well done game. The characters are adorable and whimsical. Quick witted humor. It’s a detective game and while there is moving around and pointing and clicking, it’s not a traditional point and click adventure game if that’s what you’re looking for.
It’s hard to know which direction you came from, and after a bit, I discovered there is a map that will take you anywhere you want to go so thanks for that.
It’s a relatively short game and it may make you feel like you’re almost an outsider and the characters interact without you. They come up with their own pre-prepared dialog and most things they say are clues. There really aren’t any puzzles per say but everything advances the sleuthing. It’s a process of information and elimination and you might even consider it educational in practical thinking.
This game would be more appealing to younger audiences. Again, what they’ve done here is done to perfection and it deserves the 5 stars I gave it, but I needed more head scratching adventuring.
Where's a sequel/more cases??
Wed Aug 30 2017 l2awkismThe only disappointment this game gave me is that there was only one case. I finished it so quickly(and loved it so much), that I had just assumed there was another case(or 3) that would follow. There needs to be more detective based games to play like this. One of my favorites had been the hector the inspector series and so I was very happy when I had found another detective game with voice actors and witty writing. Please make a sequel and having multiple cases, even if you release them later for purchase as they're completed like there is in the Layton Brothers: mystery room game, would be lovely.
I want more!
Mon Aug 21 2023 Dancer11234From the second I downloaded the game to the very end I couldn't put it down. Everything was perfect. The music was beautiful and the characters had so much story to each one of them. The only mistake I noticed was that when asked, Folder had no interest in himself. Other than that, this has been my favorite app in a very long time. Still...a year+ later I want a sequel. I've played it multiple times but I just want more. 2020 EDIT: the sequel was incredible and again, I’m left needing more!
Backwards gameplay
Sat Jan 25 2020 Caffine GoddessFirst off, I highly recommend this game to murder mystery gamers.
So I only discovered this game because of the sequel (in Apple Arcade). After I finished it, I wanted more. My research into when the next game would be released showed me this game. Without any hesitation, I bought it and finished it flawlessly in one night (just now). It was just as fun as the sequel, though more was added in Tangled Tower (at least I thought so).
Sad fact is that it took nearly 5 years from this for the sequel. Let’s hope the future games don’t need to take as long.
