I usually hate these 'launcher' games. They're usually just reskinned clones of 'Burrito Bison.' But Doofus Drop is so deeply, uncomfortably strange that I can't help but respect it. The art looks like something a disturbed teenager drew in the back of a notebook during detention—and I mean that as a compliment. In a world of sanitized, corporate 'Brawl Stars' aesthetics, this is a breath of foul air.

The gameplay is standard: launch, bounce, upgrade, repeat. It’s repetitive as hell, but the 'stars' of the show are the bizarre events that happen during the drop. One minute you're bouncing off a weird bird, the next you're being propelled by a fart cloud. It’s immature, yes, but it’s consistent. It doesn't take itself seriously, and it doesn't try to be anything other than a weird little waste of time. My only real complaint is that the 'garbage' collection is slow, clearly trying to push you toward the shop. But for a free-to-play game, it has more heart (and other organs) than most of the trash on the App Store.

"At first I loved Doofus Drop for its style and concept, then I played it for a minute or two and thought it was crap, then I played it for a few more minutes anyway; upgraded some stuff, accepted my own limitations within the game and settled down to enjoy the lack of effort and easy drama. Now two days later I think it is a work of rare genius and still can't put it down. It's a good game to play after a hard day contemplating the meaning of life: playfully arguing with a friend about which series of Power Rangers had the highest special effects budget, or debating what you'd miss the most after an apocalypse. It's safe to say Doofus Drop is not for everyone*, but the emotional thrill of achieving a sweet long drop (through no personal skill, merit or entitlement) is just peachy. The game invites a sort of zen-state, where the less you care about the outcome and the more you pay attention to the details the further you appear to travel, but it might just be me. Doofus Drop is an absurd, physics-based launching game with a unique, hand-drawn art style. The goal is simple: propel Doofus off a cliff and use a variety of wacky power-ups to keep him falling as long as possible. Along the way, he'll collide with garbage, villagers, and bizarre creatures. The more 'glamour' you earn, the more you can upgrade your gear—from bean-powered farts to high-speed bicycles. It's weird, gross, and incredibly addictive.
