Downwell is a masterclass in minimalist design. The three-color aesthetic is striking, and the gameplay loop is incredibly addictive. Controlling your fall with 'Gunboots' creates a unique rhythm of combat and movement that I haven't seen in any other platformer.
The difficulty is high, but it feels fair. Every death is a learning experience, teaching you how to manage your resources and pick the right upgrades at the end of each stage. It’s a perfect mobile game because the sessions are short but intense. It’s one of the few games that I keep installed on every new phone I get.

Downwell is a vertical action platformer with a heavy emphasis on risk and reward. Armed only with a pair of Gunboots, you descend into a procedurally generated well filled with nasty creatures and mysterious secrets. The Gunboots allow you to hover and shoot downward, turning your descent into a deadly dance. Collect red gems to power up, visit shops hidden in the walls, and survive as long as possible. Each run is different, offering a variety of upgrades that change how you play.
To get a high score and more gems, stay in the air. Killing enemies or landing on 'stomppable' ones without hitting the ground keeps your combo alive, rewarding you with extra health and energy at high counts.
Downwell is a game that truly comes across as an 8-bit experience made for newer consoles. It was developed solely by Ojiro Fumoto.

Use the left/right buttons to move and the action button to jump or fire your Gunboots while in the air. Manage your ammo carefully, as it only recharges when you land or stomp an enemy.
Styles like 'Boulder' or 'Levitate' change your character's stats, such as health or how fast you fall, allowing for different playstyles.
