Firmament Ode is a love letter to the classic era of turn-based strategy RPGs. If you grew up playing titles like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, you will feel immediately at home here. The game utilizes a grid-based combat system where positioning and elemental advantages are key. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it polishes the existing mechanics enough to feel modern and rewarding.
The story is surprisingly engaging for a mobile title, filled with the typical but charming tropes of warring kingdoms and ancient gods. The music is a standout feature, providing a grand, orchestral feel to the battles. My only real complaint is the user interface, which can feel a bit cluttered on smaller phone screens. Some of the menus are slightly clunky to navigate, but once you're in a battle, the tactical depth makes up for it. It's a solid choice for strategy fans looking for a meatier experience.
Dinsun here. As a Cyan Worlds veteran, I had high hopes for Firmament. It certainly captures that classic 'Myst' feeling of being alone in a strange, beautiful place. The environmental design is top-tier steampunk, and some of the puzzles are truly clever, utilizing the 'Adjunct' tool in interesting ways.
However, the technical state of the game on Mac and mobile-adjacent platforms is disappointing. It's glitchy—I've fallen through the world more than once. The controls also feel archaic; using a trackpad to look around feels clunky and there's no way to remap it properly. It feels like a VR game that was awkwardly ported to traditional screens. If you can stomach the bugs, the core experience is solid, but it's not the polished masterpiece I expected from Cyan.
Performance: Prone to clipping through terrain; frame drops on mid-range Macs.
Buy if: You are a die-hard Myst fan and have a powerful machine.
Skip if: You have low tolerance for bugs or clunky control schemes.
