GHOST PILOTS is a classic vertically scrolling 'shmup' that often feels like a love letter to Capcom's 1942 series, but with the distinct SNK flair. Flying seaplanes through military-heavy stages is incredibly satisfying, especially with the game's chunky, detailed pixel art. It’s a very 'pure' shooter; you won't find complex bullet-hell patterns here, just honest, difficult arcade dodging and blasting.

On mobile, the vertical orientation of the game fits the screen well, though the difficulty is notoriously high. Expect to use the ACA save states frequently. The weapon system is great, offering different bomb types that can clear the screen when things get too hectic. It’s a solid, if traditional, shooter that shines in short bursts.

Ghost Pilots is a product of its time. In 1991, it was an impressive display of NeoGeo power, but today, it’s just a very difficult, very brown shooter. It’s an 'old-school' shmup, which means the hitboxes are frustratingly large and the enemy fire is relentless. It was designed to take your quarters, and it hasn't lost that aggressive edge in the transition to mobile.

The seaplane theme is a nice touch, giving it a slightly different vibe than the usual sci-fi shooters, but the levels drag on for far too long. A single stage feels like it takes ten minutes, which is an eternity in a game where you die in one hit. The ACA NEOGEO features are the only reason to play this version—the ability to give yourself infinite 'credits' is the only way most people will ever see the second stage. It’s a piece of history, but not one I’m eager to revisit often.
