Chess Roguelike

Our Site Score

89/100

Gambonanza is a brilliant 'what-if' scenario: what if chess was designed for the modern roguelike era? The result is something that feels familiar yet completely chaotic. The tiny boards force you into tactical engagements immediately, and the 'Gambit' system allows for power-trips that would make a Grandmaster weep.

I love the fairground theme; it gives the game a personality that is often lacking in more 'serious' strategy titles. The tension of the board crumbling adds a necessary sense of urgency, preventing the 'infinite stall' problems some strategy games face. It’s punchy, clever, and highly replayable. This is definitely one to watch for when it drops in May.

Gambonanza is the kind of app that gives mobile gaming a bad name. It is designed around the 'more is more' philosophy—more flashing lights, more pop-ups, more 'huge win' banners that cover the entire screen. As a conservative gamer, I find this trend exhausting. There is no nuance here, just a constant assault on the senses designed to keep you tapping 'Spin' until your virtual (or real) wallet is empty.

The social features are a thin veil for peer-pressured monetization. 'Gifting' coins to friends is just a way to keep the ecosystem alive and growing. I’ve seen these machines a thousand times before. There’s no innovation in the bonus rounds or the math behind the reels. It’s a cookie-cutter product that relies on its bright colors to attract the easily distracted. If you want a real game, look elsewhere. If you want to waste an hour watching numbers go up and down, this is as good—or bad—as any other casino app.
