Go Ape Ship is exactly as chaotic and fun as it sounds. Taking the 'Sea of Thieves' concept and replacing the humans with monkeys is a stroke of genius. The gameplay is a mix of ship management and arcade-style naval combat. Keeping your Gorilla gunners fed so they can keep firing the coconut cannons adds a layer of frantic energy that I haven't seen in other pirate games.
The humor is top-notch; seeing a chimp in a captain's hat shouting orders at an orangutan repairing the hull never gets old. The open-world exploration is surprisingly deep, with plenty of hidden islands and 'sea monsters' to discover. It’s a lighthearted, wacky adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously but offers plenty of content to sink your teeth into.
Go Ape Ship is fine. It’s the kind of game you’d play while waiting for a bus and then never think about again. The 'ape in a spaceship' theme is quirky, I'll give it that, and the controls are tight enough to avoid frustration. But it’s fundamentally an endless runner with a different skin. There’s no progression that feels meaningful, and the difficulty spikes too early. It reminds me of the flash games from the early 2000s—fun for ten minutes, but lacking the depth to keep a grown man interested for any longer. It’s okay for a freebie.
Performance: Very smooth performance; clearly optimized for older mobile hardware.
