Gridlock Dungeon is a clever hybrid that takes the 'sliding block' puzzle mechanic and skins it as a classic dungeon crawler. Instead of moving your hero, you often have to shift the environment to clear a path to the exit. It’s a 'think-before-you-move' experience that rewarded my patience and punished my impulsivity in equal measure.

The pixel art is charmingly lo-fi, and the dungeon themes change enough to keep the visuals from becoming stale. As an expert in puzzle design, I appreciated the way the game introduces new hazards—like floor spikes and roaming enemies—that force you to rethink your sliding strategy. It’s a tight, well-constructed puzzle game that fits perfectly into short mobile sessions.

I’ve been pushing blocks into holes since the 80s, and Gridlock Dungeon doesn't do much to change the formula. It’s a competent Sokoban-style game with a dungeon coat of paint. The puzzles are well-designed—they’re fair and get progressively tougher—but I never felt that 'aha!' moment of brilliance that the greats like Stephen's Sausage Roll provide.

The visual style is 'minimalist,' which is often code for 'we didn't have an artist.' It’s functional but boring to look at for more than ten minutes. For a few bucks, it’s a fine way to kill time in a waiting room, but it’s not something I’d go home and tell my friends about. It’s a snack, not a meal. I’m giving it a 58 because it does exactly what it says on the tin, but it doesn't do a lick more.

Monster Hazards

Some tiles contain enemies that move when you do. You must slide the rooms so that you never land on a tile adjacent to a monster, or use traps within the grid to eliminate them.
