Hue is a minimalist puzzle game that focuses on the subtle art of color perception. It’s an 'odd-one-out' style game where you must identify the tile with a slightly different shade from the rest. While the concept is simple, the execution is highly polished, with a clean aesthetic and a difficulty curve that ramps up perfectly as the colors become more similar and the grid grows larger.
The addition of real-time online multiplayer through GameCenter transforms it from a relaxing solo experience into a high-pressure competition. Racing against another player to find the odd shade is surprisingly intense. It’s the kind of game that is perfect for 'brain training' or just a quick mental reset. The small file size and quick loading times make it a great 'filler' game to have on your phone for whenever you have a spare minute.
I've seen my share of 'innovative' indies, and Hue actually manages to bring something functional to the table with its color-wheel mechanic. It’s not just a visual trick; the way you have to mentally map the disappearance of platforms and lasers based on the background color requires a decent bit of focus. The narrative is surprisingly somber—dealing with a missing mother and the philosophy of color—which is a nice break from the usual fluff, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of the genre's best.
However, let's not get carried away. The platforming itself is standard fare, and if you’ve played any puzzle-platformer in the last decade, you’ll see the solutions coming a mile away. It’s a short trip, maybe a few hours tops, and once the novelty of the color wheel wears off, you're left with a fairly linear path. It’s polished, sure, but it’s a 'one-and-done' experience that doesn't demand much in the way of mastery or replayability.
Performance: Solid 60fps on modern iOS devices; very few bugs due to its simplistic 2D nature.
Buy if: You enjoy atmospheric indie games like Limbo or Braid and want a puzzle mechanic that feels fresh.

Don't look at individual tiles. Try to relax your eyes and look at the grid as a whole; the 'odd' tile will often seem to 'pop' or vibrate against the rest of the pattern.
