Hexes Honeycomb is a surprisingly deep digital adaptation of the classic board game Hive. As an expert in abstract strategy, I found the implementation to be clean and mechanically sound. The core loop—surrounding the opponent's Queen Bee while protecting your own—is as tense as ever, and the variety of insect pieces (Ants, Grasshoppers, Beetles) offers a chess-like depth without the need for a board.
However, the monetization model is a significant point of contention. While the base game is polished, the requirement to pay a monthly subscription for specific pieces like the Ladybug or Pillbug feels aggressive for a mobile board game. If you are a hardcore fan of Hive looking for a way to play on the go with a clean UI, this is technically the best version available, but casual players might be put off by the recurring costs to access the full strategic roster.
Dinsun here. I have a soft spot for clean, well-designed logic puzzles, and Hexes: Honeycomb is exactly that. It doesn't try to be flashy; it just gives you a grid and some shapes and tells you to figure it out. The progression is well-paced, and some of the later levels legitimately made me stop and think for more than five minutes, which I appreciate. The 'zen' vibe is well-executed—no timers, no high scores, just you and the puzzle.
However, it’s a bit too sterile for its own good. It lacks the 'ah-ha!' moment of a game like The Witness or the clever personality of Baba Is You. It’s the digital equivalent of a Sudoku book: it’s fine for a flight, but you’re not going to be thinking about it once you put it down. It’s a 58. It’s a good, honest puzzle game that lacks that extra spark of genius to make it a great one.
Performance: Perfect performance; almost zero battery drain.

Hexes Honeycomb brings the deep strategy of the board game Hive to mobile. Players move various insect-themed pieces—each with unique movement rules—across a boardless grid. The objective is simple but challenging: completely surround the opponent's Queen Bee. Featuring offline play against AI and online multiplayer, it captures the 'easy to learn, hard to master' essence of top-tier abstract strategy games.

Start by placing your Queen Bee early but defensively. Use your Ants for high mobility to pin down enemy pieces, and leverage the Beetle to climb on top of the hive, blocking opponent movements and changing the color of the space beneath.

Each piece has a specific role: Grasshoppers jump over lines of pieces, Spiders move exactly three spaces around the edge, and the Queen only moves one space at a time. Balancing offense and defense is key to preventing your own Queen from being trapped.
It is a custom-made implementation of the Hive mechanics, designed for mobile and iPad play.
