Bringing Munch’s Oddysee to mobile was an ambitious move, and it mostly pays off. The world of Oddworld is as weird and captivating as ever. Controlling both Abe and Munch adds a layer of puzzle-solving depth that keeps the gameplay fresh.
While the touch controls take a bit of getting used to compared to a console controller, the developers did a good job making it playable. The humor is dark, the stakes are high, and rescuing those poor Fuzzles is still a moral imperative. It's a great way to experience a classic 3D platformer on the go.
Look, I remember the buzz when this was an Xbox launch title. Back then, we were all blinded by the 'new and improved 3D' marketing. Revisiting this on mobile as a 40-year-old, the cracks are impossible to ignore. Oddworld Inhabitants are masters of atmosphere—the world of Munch and Abe is thick with a dour, industrial anti-capitalist mood that I still respect. The humor is pitch-black and the character designs are genuinely imaginative, which is more than I can say for most modern mobile fluff.
But the actual 'playing' part? It's a chore. The transition from the tight 2D screens of the previous games to this sprawling 3D space left the controls feeling loose and imprecise. On a touchscreen, it's even worse; you'll spend half your time fighting the camera and the other half trying to jump with a 'floatiness' that makes every platforming section a gamble. The missions are repetitive—gather X items to open Y door, over and over. It's a 'fossil' of a game. I give it points for personality and the fact that it's a full, lavish production without predatory microtransactions, but don't expect it to play like a modern masterpiece. It’s a nostalgic trip that reminds you why some things were better left in the 90s.
