80/100

Pucko is a minimalist physics puzzler that understands the power of 'less is more.' The objective is simple: get your puck to the goal by bouncing off walls and avoiding obstacles. As an expert in game feel, I was struck by how much weight and friction matters here. The difference between a light tap and a full-power flick is palpable, making the mastery of the physics engine a core part of the satisfaction.

The aesthetic is clean and modern, using bold colors and simple shapes that ensure the player never feels overwhelmed by visual noise. The level design is where the game truly shines, consistently introducing new 'puzzle' elements—like portals, moving walls, and gravity wells—at a pace that keeps you engaged without being frustrated. It’s a perfect 'flow' game; once you find the rhythm of the bounces, it becomes a deeply meditative and satisfying experience that is ideal for short breaks.

Pucko is the kind of game that wouldn't have looked out of place in 2008. It’s bare-bones. You’ve got a mallet, you’ve got a puck, and you’ve got a goal. I appreciate the 'no-nonsense' approach—no ads, no microtransactions, just a game. It’s refreshing in today's landscape. But once you’ve played three matches, you’ve seen everything the game has to offer. The AI is 'hard,' but mostly because it just moves faster than a human could, which is a cheap way to handle difficulty.

As a local multiplayer game, it’s a decent way to kill five minutes with a friend, but the screen gets cramped on anything smaller than an iPad. It’s a competent bit of programming, but it lacks any unique hook or visual personality to make it stand out from the dozens of other air hockey clones. It’s honest, but it’s also boring. I’d rather play the real thing at an arcade.
