Riding Hero is a fascinating piece of history, being one of the few attempts at an RPG-style story mode in an early arcade motorcycle game. While the racing itself is standard vertically-scrolling sprite action, the 'WGP' mode where you buy parts and talk to NPCs is surprisingly ahead of its time. It gives the racing a sense of context and stakes that was rare in 1990.

The mobile port is solid, though the controls take some getting used to as they require precise 'leaning' to avoid sliding out on corners. The graphics are charmingly retro, featuring that classic NeoGeo 'chunky' sprite look. Like other ACA titles, the ability to save states is a godsend for the difficult later races. It’s a must-play for fans of retro racing games like Hang-On, offering a bit more depth than your average arcade quarter-eater.

Riding Hero tried to do something interesting back in the day by adding a story mode to a racing game, but interest doesn't equate to quality. The controls are abysmally stiff. Trying to weave through traffic with touch inputs is an exercise in futility. The sense of speed is decent for the era, but the collision detection is punishingly unfair. The RPG elements are surface-level and mostly involve a lot of grinding. It feels like a game that was designed to eat quarters in an arcade, and that design philosophy doesn't translate well to a home experience unless you enjoy slamming your head against a wall. It’s an interesting footnote in SNK’s history, but as a game, it’s best left in the past.
