Rhetoric: The Public Speaking Game is a bold attempt to gamify a skill that most people find terrifying. As a communication expert, I find the board game format surprisingly effective. It breaks down public speaking into manageable 'prompts'—from storytelling to impromptu persuasion—which takes some of the sting out of the practice.
The game is best played in a group setting where peers can provide feedback. While the app itself is essentially a digital board and timer, the value lies in the social interaction it facilitates. It’s not quite a 'game' you play alone for fun; it's a training tool disguised as entertainment. If you’re a teacher or a corporate trainer, this is a fantastic resource. For solo players, however, the experience is limited since there is no AI to 'judge' your speech. It’s all about the people in the room with you.
As a veteran gamer who values deep mechanics and engaging feedback loops, I find it difficult to classify 'Rhetoric' as a true video game. It is fundamentally a digitized board game acting as a prompt generator for public speaking exercises. While I can appreciate the utility of an application designed to help people overcome stage fright or improve their articulation, it simply does not hold up to scrutiny under traditional gaming metrics. The digital execution is entirely barebones, doing the absolute minimum to facilitate the physical act of speaking out loud to your friends or colleagues.
From a purely conservative gaming perspective, the app offers zero intrinsic motivation, no compelling progression, and completely relies on the players' real-world participation to generate any semblance of 'fun.' If you are hosting a corporate team-building exercise, this might serve a purpose. However, for a solitary gamer looking for an engaging digital experience on their iOS device, this is a complete miss. I cannot give this a passing grade as a game, even if it functions adequately as an educational utility.
