OutRun Racer in IOS

A fun little racing game

70/100

OutRun Racer (formerly Runout Racing) is a charming homage to the 16-bit era of arcade racers. It doesn't try to compete with high-fidelity simulators; instead, it leans into the nostalgia of scanlines and pixelated cars. The AI-generated maps are a standout feature, ensuring that you aren't just memorizing the same turns every time you play. Every run feels slightly different, which helps extend the life of such a small-footprint game.

The controls are as simple as it gets—tap left or right. However, the difficulty ramps up quickly as you dodge traffic and try to avoid falling into the water. It’s a perfect 'waiting in line' game that runs smoothly on almost any device. While it lacks deep progression, the pure arcade joy and the inclusion of various music tracks make it a worthy download for fans of retro racing.

Dinsun Review

I like a good arcade racer as much as the next guy, but Runout Racing misses the mark on the most important thing: how the car actually feels. It looks the part—lots of neon and motion blur—but the steering is floaty and the sense of speed is artificial. It feels more like the track is moving while your car stays still.

It’s a very modern, style-over-substance approach. I’ve played racers from twenty years ago that had more satisfying drift mechanics than this. It’s not terrible, and it’s certainly more exciting than a matching puzzle, but it’s not a 'real' racing game. It’s a spectacle that gets old once you realize the 'physics' are just a suggestion. It’s a shame because the aesthetic is actually quite cool.
