Our Site Score

82/100

SAMURAI SHODOWN III joins the ACA NEOGEO lineup, bringing one of the most experimental and moody entries of the series to mobile. Often cited for its darker tone and the introduction of the 'Slash' and 'Bust' systems, this title fundamentally changed how characters played, offering two distinct move sets for every fighter. On mobile, the conversion is surprisingly sharp. The high-stakes, high-damage gameplay remains intact, where a single well-timed heavy strike can turn the tide of a match.

While touch controls are rarely ideal for frame-perfect fighting games, the inclusion of customizable button layouts and rapid-fire functions makes it playable for casual fans. However, to truly appreciate the technical depth—like the back-step and side-step maneuvers—using a Bluetooth controller is highly recommended. The 'ACA' features, such as save states and online ranking modes, add a lot of modern value to this 1995 classic, making it a must-have for SNK purists.

Samurai Shodown III is a masterpiece of tension. One wrong move and half your health bar is gone. It's about respect, distance, and the perfect strike. But on a touchscreen? It's a crime against gaming. Trying to pull off a Z-motion or a half-circle on a flat piece of glass is an exercise in futility. SNK games were built for high-quality arcade sticks, and without one, you're just button-mashing and hoping for the best.

The ACA NEOGEO wrapper is great—I love the scanline filters and the ability to tweak the MVS settings. Hamster does a fantastic job with these ports. But let’s be real: this is for the guys who carry a Bluetooth controller in their bag. If you’re just using your thumbs, you’re not playing Samurai Shodown; you’re playing a very expensive game of 'Simon Says' with your phone. It’s a 9/10 game reduced to a 6/10 experience by the hardware.
