STAKES WINNER is a refreshing departure from the usual arcade fighting and shooting fare. This horse racing action game captures the excitement of the turf with a unique arcade twist. Unlike realistic simulators, this is all about timing and strategy. You have to manage your horse's stamina while navigating through the pack, using items found on the track to gain an edge.

The mobile port handles the 'jockey' mechanics well. Tapping to whip or using the reins feels responsive enough for a mobile screen. It’s a game of positioning—finding the right line to avoid getting boxed in by other riders. The ACA features are particularly helpful here, as the arcade difficulty can be unforgiving if you waste your horse's energy too early in a race.

Horse racing isn't exactly my go-to genre, but back in the NeoGeo days, SNK could make anything entertaining. Stakes Winner is less about betting and more about aggressive positioning. It’s an arcade racer where the 'cars' are horses. You pick up power-ups, whip your horse until it’s exhausted, and try not to get boxed in by the AI. It’s simple, weird, and distinctly 90s.

However, it lacks the depth of other SNK classics. Once you’ve won a few races, you’ve seen everything the game has to offer. The mobile port is fine because the controls are relatively simple—just a few buttons for whipping and movement—but it still feels like a 'lesser' NeoGeo title. It’s the kind of game you play for ten minutes, say 'that was neat,' and then never touch again. Great for collectors, but skip it if you want something with meat on its bones.
