Top Players Golf is a pixel-perfect time capsule of the early 90s sports arcade era. As part of the ACA NeoGeo series, it offers a faithful port of SNK’s take on the sport. It isn't a 'realistic' golf sim by modern standards, but it’s arguably more fun because of it. The voice acting is legendary for its 'cheesy' quality, and the high-contrast sprite work still looks fantastic on a modern OLED screen.

The mechanics are based on the classic 'three-tap' bar system, which is timeless and easy to master. What I love about this version are the modern quality-of-life improvements, like the ability to save and load anywhere. It makes the punishing later holes much more manageable. It’s a hit of pure nostalgia that provides a very relaxing, rhythmic gameplay loop that hasn't aged a day. It’s perfect for a quiet afternoon of retro gaming.

Look, I love NeoGeo as much as the next guy who grew up in the 90s, but let’s be realistic: Top Player's Golf wasn't even the best golf game when it came out. The digitized voices are charmingly crusty, and the sprite work is clean, but the gameplay is archaic. The wind and surface physics are rudimentary at best. Hamster Corp did a fine job with the port—the emulation is perfect—but they’re polishing a very old stone. It’s stiff, the controls feel sluggish on a touchscreen without a dedicated controller, and there’s absolutely zero reason to play this over a modern golf sim unless you’re on a nostalgia trip. It’s a museum piece. Respect it for what it was, but don't expect it to compete with anything from this decade.

Before your first tap, check the wind meter at the top right. If the wind is above 5m/s, aim two notches in the opposite direction to ensure your ball lands on the fairway.
