Twinkle Star Sprites is one of the most unique games in the NEOGEO library, effectively inventing the 'competitive scrolling shooter' genre. Instead of just dodging bullets, you are playing a head-to-head battle against an opponent on a split-screen. Destroying enemies on your side sends 'fireballs' and obstacles to your opponent's side, creating a frantic and strategic tug-of-war that feels like a cross between Puyo Puyo and Gradius.

The art style is adorable 'magical girl' anime aesthetic, which contrasts hilariously with the intense difficulty of the later stages. The ACA port handles the split-screen brilliantly on mobile, though it's best played on a tablet to really see the incoming projectiles. It’s a colorful, chaotic, and incredibly creative game that proves the arcade era was full of innovative ideas that still feel fresh today.
