Now this is how you do a remaster. It’s not some lazy upscale; the ability to flip between the blocky original graphics and the smoother new ones is exactly what a purist like me wants. These games were brutal in 1996 and they’re still brutal now. They don’t hold your hand. If you miss a jump, you die. I miss that kind of consequence in modern gaming.
However, let’s be real: touch controls for a game designed for a D-pad and shoulder buttons is a nightmare. You absolutely need a controller to play this properly on a phone. The camera is still as temperamental as it was thirty years ago, which I suppose is 'authentic' but still annoying. It’s a lot of content for the price, and for a 40-year-old who grew up with this, it’s a great trip down memory lane, even if the tank controls make my thumbs hurt more than they used to.
