Our Site Score

78/100

Urcase Dungeon: Kanji Shogun is a brilliant fusion of educational software and classic rogue-like dungeon crawling. For anyone struggling to memorize Japanese characters, this game turns the grind into a quest. You navigate through stylized dungeons where your primary weapon is your knowledge of Kanji. The combat system requires you to identify or complete characters to defeat monsters, making the learning process feel urgent and rewarding.

Technically, the game is lightweight but stylish, using a 'Shogun-era' aesthetic that fits the subject matter perfectly. It starts with basic N5 level Kanji and progressively gets harder, catering to both beginners and advanced students. The loop of exploring, fighting, and leveling up your 'Kanji power' is genuinely addictive. It might be too niche for someone with zero interest in Japanese, but as a functional learning tool disguised as a game, it's one of the best on the App Store.

Dinsun Review

Dinsun here. I usually despise educational games because they are usually terrible at both teaching and being fun. Kanji Shogun is a pleasant surprise. It uses a very basic retro dungeon-crawler framework, but the integration of Kanji feels natural rather than forced.

It’s not perfect—the RPG mechanics are incredibly thin, and it won't replace a real textbook. But if you’re already studying Japanese, this is a much better way to spend 15 minutes than scrolling through social media. The difficulty curve is decent, and it actually demands you pay attention. It’s conservative in its design, sticking to what works without overcomplicating things with microtransactions. It’s a tool for a specific audience, but it does its job well.
