The controls require a gentle touch; oversteering is easy on the ice, and missing even a small patch of rough surface will penalize your score. It’s a game of precision and pathfinding.

Graphically, the game is simple but effective, providing a clear bird's-eye view of the rink that allows you to plan your route. The 'Challenge' aspect comes from the fuel and water management—you can't just drive aimlessly. You have to optimize your path to ensure every square inch of the ice is gleaming before your resources run out. It’s a quirky, oddly relaxing experience that offers a unique perspective on the 'behind the scenes' of winter sports.

I’ve seen a lot of things in my forty years of gaming, but driving a virtual Zamboni might be the pinnacle of 'games that should have been a mini-game.' There is a certain novelty in finally getting behind the wheel of the machine every hockey fan loves, but that novelty wears off before the first period is even over. The controls are functional enough on a touch screen, but there's absolutely no weight to the machine. It feels like you're sliding a puck over the ice rather than operating a heavy industrial vehicle.

The progression is non-existent. You resurface the ice, you get a score, and you do it again. There’s no career depth, no mechanical maintenance, and certainly no reason to keep coming back once you've cleared the rink a handful of times. In an era where even the most basic simulators try to add some 'tycoon' elements or at least a sense of mastery, Zamboni Challenge remains frozen in a very primitive state. It's an amusing distraction for about five minutes, but I can't in good conscience say there's a real game here.
