Elysium Frontier is, quite frankly, a masterclass in mobile optimization. From the moment you step out onto the first overlook, the sheer scale of the world hits you. Unlike many mobile ARPGs that feel like a series of interconnected hallways, this feels like a living, breathing world. The combat is punchy; there’s a weight to the animations that you rarely see on a touchscreen, and the elemental system adds a layer of strategy that keeps the grind from feeling repetitive.
What truly impressed me was the lack of 'clutter' usually found in F2P titles. The monetization is present but stays firmly in the background, allowing the narrative to take center stage. The voice acting is top-notch, and the orchestral score is genuinely moving. If you have a flagship device, the 60fps performance makes this a must-play. It’s not just a great mobile game; it’s a great game, period.
Look, I've played plenty of card games since the 90s, and most of them just try to be the next Slay the Spire. Monster Train actually tries something different. The three-floor mechanic isn't just a gimmick; it adds a layer of planning that most of these mobile 'roguelites' lack. It’s satisfying to set up a defense that actually holds up.
However, the mobile port has some issues. The UI is clearly designed for a mouse, and on a smaller screen, things get crowded. I've had a few 'fat-finger' moments where I played the wrong card because the hitboxes are finicky. It’s a solid game, no doubt, but the technical execution on touch screens keeps it from being perfect. It’s better than most junk on the App Store, but it needs a bit more polish on the interface.
Performance: Mostly stable 60fps, but can stutter on older iPhones when many status effects are active.
Buy if: You want a deep, replayable strategy game and don't mind a steep learning curve.
Skip if: You prefer simple pick-up-and-play games or have no patience for complex card synergies.
Available on: iPhone, iPad, iPod
