The return of MySims™ is an absolute win for fans of the 'cozy' genre. Originally a spin-off of the main Sims series, MySims always had a unique, blocky charm that felt more like playing with LEGO than managing a life sim. This Apple Arcade version is the definitive way to play it today. The updated graphics are clean and crisp, and the one-finger swipe camera controls are a massive improvement over the original hardware's limitations. It feels right at home on an iPad.
The gameplay loop is deceptively simple: find essences, build stuff, attract people, repeat. But there's a creative freedom in the workshop that many modern games lack. Designing a custom chair or jukebox feels genuinely personal. It’s a bit simplified compared to a full Sims title, making it much more accessible for younger players or those who just want to chill. My only complaint is that the early game can feel a bit slow as you gather your first few essences, but once the town starts filling up, the charm is undeniable.
Now we're getting into actual games. MySims was always the 'Sims Lite' for a younger crowd, and this port doesn't change that. As a 40-year-old, I appreciate the simplicity of the building mechanics—it's almost meditative. However, the mission structure is incredibly repetitive. 'Build this, talk to him, collect this essence.' It feels like a chore list after a while. The aesthetics are charming in a 2007 sort of way, but the touch controls aren't nearly as precise as a mouse or a stylus. It’s a decent time-waster, but don't expect the depth of a mainline Sims title.
Performance: Occasional frame drops in crowded town areas; load times are slightly longer than expected.
Buy if: You have fond memories of the Wii version or enjoy Animal Crossing-lite games.
Skip if: You want a complex life simulator with deep social systems.
Available on: Mac, iPhone, iPad
