Castles Board Game is a hidden gem for fans of tile-placement strategy. It takes the classic mechanics of games like Carcassonne and distills them into a clean, mobile-friendly format that works perfectly for both quick solo matches and long sessions with friends. The core loop of placing tiles to build roads, churches, and castles is simple to learn but offers deep tactical possibilities, especially when you start fighting over 'peasant' placement to claim major territory.

The app's 'pass and play' mode is fantastic for family gatherings, but the online multiplayer via Game Center is where the real challenge lies. I was also pleasantly surprised by the 'computer' players; the AI is surprisingly competent, especially if you unlock the 'Hard' difficulty. It’s an automatically saving game, which is a huge plus for mobile—you can close the app mid-turn and jump right back in whenever you have a free minute. If you enjoy spatial puzzles and competitive board games, this is an essential download.

Dinsun Review

Digital board games are a mixed bag for me. Castles is as dry as a week-old cracker. The mechanics are ported accurately, sure, but where is the flair? The interface is clunky and feels like it was ported from a desktop version without any thought for touch ergonomics. I found myself misclicking tiles constantly.

Strategy-wise, it’s fine if you’re a fan of the original board game, but for anyone else, the tutorial is abysmal. It expects you to already know the meta. As a 40-year-old, I don't have the patience to fight against a UI just to place a stone wall. It’s functional, but it feels like work rather than play. If you aren't a die-hard tabletop fan, there's no reason to be here.
