89/100

Fran Bow is a hauntingly beautiful dive into psychological horror, seen through the eyes of a young girl. Chapter 1 sets the stage perfectly, balancing the stark reality of an oppressive mental institution with the surreal, bloody visions triggered by Fran's medication. The art style is striking—macabre yet whimsical, reminiscent of a dark storybook.

The 'pill' mechanic is the heart of the gameplay, allowing you to flip between two versions of reality to solve puzzles. It’s unsettling in the best way possible, forcing you to interact with the grotesque to find your way home. For fans of point-and-click adventures, Fran Bow offers a level of atmospheric storytelling and emotional depth that is rarely seen in the genre. It's not just about the jump scares; it's about the disturbing mystery of Fran's mind and her quest for her cat, Mr. Midnight.

Dinsun Review

Dinsun here. I don't usually go for games that rely on shock value, but Fran Bow manages to be genuinely creepy without feeling cheap. The hand-drawn art looks like a twisted children's book, which only makes the gore more effective. This isn't a game for the faint of heart, but the puzzles are logical enough, even when you're hallucinating a blood-soaked asylum floor.

The writing is solid, though the pacing in this first chapter is a bit slow as it sets up the lore. It’s a point-and-click at heart, so expect a fair amount of pixel hunting. It’s a bleak experience, but for those who appreciate atmospheric horror that respects the player’s intelligence, it’s worth a look. I'm taking off points for the episodic format; I'd rather just have the whole game in one package.
