I've seen some egregious monetization in my time, but Idle Oil Well really takes the cake. It’s barely a game; it’s an ad-delivery platform disguised as a tycoon sim. You spend more time watching thirty-second clips of other bad games than you do actually managing your 'well.' The progression is tuned to grind to a halt unless you're willing to sacrifice your sanity to the 'double rewards' button.
The graphics are fine, I suppose—clean and functional—but there's no depth here. You click a button, wait for a bar to fill, and then click it again. There’s no strategy in the upgrades, just a linear path of 'make number go up.' For a 40-year-old who grew up on SimCity and proper management titles, this feels like a step backward for the medium. It's a time-sink in the worst way possible.
