I have a love-hate relationship with games like this. Mr Jump S is as 'old-school' as it gets in terms of difficulty. It’s brutal. You will die hundreds of times. But the controls are so tight that you can never blame the game—it’s always your fault. That’s the mark of a well-designed conservative platformer.

The minimalist art is clean and functional, which you need when you're trying to time a jump down to the millisecond. It doesn't try to be anything it isn't. My only issue is that it can feel more like a memory test than a skill test after a while. It’s about memorizing the pattern of spikes rather than reacting. If you have the patience of a saint, you'll love it. If not, your phone might end up across the room.
