Piano Notes is a focused and effective educational tool for anyone looking to bridge the gap between 'playing by ear' and actually reading music. It avoids the fluff of typical rhythm games and gets straight to the point: identifying notes on a staff quickly. The interface is clean and mirrors a real piano keyboard, which helps with the mental translation from page to instrument.
What I appreciated most was the tiered difficulty. It starts with simple natural notes in the treble clef and slowly introduces bass clef, sharps, and flats. The feedback is instant, which is crucial for building the 'muscle memory' of the eyes. While itβs more of a trainer than a game, the high-score system provides enough incentive to keep practicing until note-reading becomes second nature.
Look, Iβve seen a hundred of these 'educational' apps, and most of them are fluff. Piano Notes! is at least honest about what it is: a digital drill sergeant for your eyes. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of modern rhythm games, but if you actually care about learning the difference between an F and a G on a staff without counting lines every time, this does the job. Itβs dry, itβs repetitive, and the UI looks like it hasn't been touched since the iPhone 4 era, but repetition is how you learn.
Iβm not going to give it a high score because it barely qualifies as a 'game' in the traditional senseβitβs a utility with a timer. The lack of varied musical pieces or a progression system that feels rewarding makes it hard to use for more than ten minutes at a time. However, for a buck or two, itβs a functional tool for a very specific purpose. Don't expect to be entertained; expect to be quizzed.
Performance: Very lightweight; runs smoothly on almost any device due to low graphical demand.
Buy if: You are a music student struggling with sight-reading and want a simple drill tool.
Skip if: You want a 'game' like Rock Band or Synthesia with modern visuals.

Choose between Treble or Bass clef mode. When a note appears on the staff, tap the corresponding key on the piano keyboard below. Try to maintain a streak to increase your score and accuracy rating.
Once you are comfortable with the notes, enter the 'Timed Mode' to see how many notes you can correctly identify in 60 seconds. This builds the speed necessary for real-world sheet music reading.
Yes, it starts with the most basic notes and includes an 'Identify' mode to help you learn the keys before you start the drills.
