I don't usually go for 'quirky' indie games, but Pine Tar Poker has a solid mechanical foundation. It takes the familiar rules of poker and throws in enough variables to make you actually think about your deck composition. The baseball theme is an odd choice, but it gives the game a personality that most card games lack. It feels like something that would have been a cult hit on the DS back in the day.

It’s a bit rough around the edges—the UI could be cleaner, and the tutorial is a bit of a mess. You'll spend the first hour or two just trying to figure out what the different items actually do. Once it clicks, it's quite engaging, but the learning curve is unnecessarily steep for a card game. It’s a good 'commuter' game, provided you have the patience to learn its eccentricities. Not a masterpiece, but it’s trying something new, which I have to respect.
