I'll be honest, I didn't expect much from a mobile port, especially one tucked behind a Netflix sub. But The Case of the Golden Idol is the real deal. It reminds me of the old-school investigative games where you actually had to take notes and think, rather than just clicking on highlighted objects until a cutscene plays. The art style is grotesque and ugly in a way that is intentionally brilliant, capturing the seediness of the 18th-century setting perfectly.
The logic puzzles are tight. There’s no hand-holding. When you solve a case, it’s because you actually deduced who was who and what their motive was. It’s rare to find a game this smart nowadays. My only gripe is that the touch controls can be a bit finicky when dragging words around on a small screen, but that's a minor complaint for a game this masterfully written. It’s a standout in a sea of mediocrity.
