Our Site Score

86/100

The Beasts of Burden is arguably the most mechanically interesting entry in the Voice of Cards trilogy. It introduces a monster-taming mechanic that feels right at home in this card-based world. Defeating monsters allows you to trap them in cards and use them as skills, adding a layer of collection and customization that was missing from the earlier titles.

The story is darker, focusing on a world where humans and monsters are at constant odds. This thematic shift is reflected in the art and the haunting soundtrack. If you only play one Voice of Cards game, this should probably be the one, simply because the monster-trapping loop is so satisfying and integrates perfectly with the tabletop aesthetic.

Dinsun Review

Yoko Taro’s influence is all over this, which is both a blessing and a curse. As a gamer who grew up on physical tabletop sessions, I appreciate the aesthetic—the cards flipping, the gamemaster’s narration, the dice rolls. It’s charming. However, the 'game' part of this RPG is incredibly thin. The combat is far too easy for anyone who has played a Dragon Quest game in the last thirty years. It moves at a glacial pace, and the monster-trapping mechanic feels like a tacked-on afterthought to justify the 'Beasts of Burden' title. It’s a beautiful experience to look at, but as a tactical challenge, it’s lacking. Square Enix is charging a premium for what is essentially a digital board game with very few rules. I’m giving it a 72 because the story and atmosphere are top-tier, but the gameplay loop won't keep a serious gamer awake for long. It’s a good 'chill' game, but don't expect it to replace your main RPG rotation.
