Katamari Damacy is one of the most uniquely joyful video games ever created, and Rolling LIVE captures that exact chaotic magic on mobile. There is something profoundly satisfying about the progression of scale. You start off as a tiny prince struggling to roll up a battery on the living room floor, and within ten minutes, you are rolling down the street absorbing entire buildings and screaming pedestrians. And you do it all to one of the catchiest, most upbeat soundtracks in gaming history.
Playing it on a touch screen takes a little bit of adjustment—the dual-stick rolling mechanic was designed for physical controllers, so syncing a gamepad to your device is highly recommended for the best experience. Some players have reported occasional crashes on older iOS builds, but when it runs smoothly, it is a blast. It is a weird, wonderful, and insanely fun game that deserves to be played by everyone.
Katamari is a game about precision and momentum. Using two virtual sticks on a flat piece of glass to simulate the 'tank controls' of the original is a nightmare. I spent more time fighting the camera and my own thumbs than I did rolling up household items.
The charm is still there—the music remains some of the best in gaming history—but the frustration of the controls ruins the experience. It’s a port that shouldn't have been made this way. If you can't play it with a controller, don't bother. It’s a sad way to experience a masterpiece.
Performance: Physics engine struggles when too many objects are on screen.
Buy if: You have an external controller and want nostalgia on the go.
Skip if: You rely on touchscreens for gaming.

Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE brings the wonderfully bizarre universe of Katamari to Apple Arcade. After the King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky, he tasks his tiny son, the Prince, with recreating them. You do this by rolling a highly adhesive ball, the Katamari, around various Earth locations. You start small, picking up ants and paperclips, but as your Katamari grows, you'll soon be rolling up people, cars, and eventually entire skyscrapers. Backed by one of the most infectious, jazzy soundtracks in gaming history, it's a delightful, surreal experience of scale and momentum.
