Our Site Score

86/100

Castles of Mad King Ludwig is an exceptional port of a modern board game classic. The digital version captures the 'Master Builder' auction mechanic perfectly—a phase where you set prices for rooms that other players want to buy, which is one of the most clever social interactions in tabletop gaming.

The iOS version adds a fantastic Campaign mode that takes you through 15 real-life castle sites, which provides a much-needed solo experience that the original board game lacked. The 'Training Tower' is an excellent tutorial that makes the somewhat complex rules accessible to newcomers. The orchestral soundtrack and crisp room tile artwork make the building process genuinely relaxing. It’s a must-have for strategy fans who enjoy spatial puzzles and economic management.

Dinsun Review

Dinsun here. This is how you do a board game port. No unnecessary animations, no microtransaction fluff—just the game. Castles of Mad King Ludwig is a thinker's game. The Master Builder mechanic is one of the most clever systems in tabletop history, forcing you to value your opponents' needs against your own greed.

The UI is a bit cramped on a phone—I’d strongly suggest playing this on a tablet—but the implementation of the rules is flawless. It’s not a 'fun' game in the sense of dopamine hits; it's satisfying in the way a well-solved puzzle is. My only real gripe is that the AI can be a bit predictable at lower levels, and the online community isn't always active. But as a strategy exercise? It’s rock solid.
