The mobile port of Doom is a surprisingly robust way to experience the grandfather of FPS games. While playing a first-person shooter with touch controls can sometimes be a chore, Bethesda/id Software did a great job with the customization. You can move the buttons anywhere, which is a life-saver.
The game runs incredibly smooth, maintaining that fast-paced 60fps action that is essential for Doom's gameplay. All the classic levels are here, and the music still pumps you up as much as it did in the 90s. It’s a bit weird playing Doom on a phone, but the sheer quality of the level design makes it hard to put down. It's a classic for a reason.
Look, it’s DOOM. We all know what this is. Having it on a phone is a technical achievement if we were still living in 2009, but today it’s just another port of a thirty-year-old game. The gameplay remains the gold standard for pure, unadulterated speed, but playing it on a piece of glass feels fundamentally wrong. The touch controls are passable, but they lack the tactile precision this game demands.
I appreciate the inclusion of the 'Thy Flesh Consumed' expansion, which adds some much-needed meat to the bones. However, as a 40-year-old who grew up with a keyboard and mouse, I find the lack of native-feeling modernization frustrating. It’s a clean port, sure, but it feels more like a museum exhibit than a definitive way to play. It’s a classic, but it’s a classic that belongs on a different platform.
Performance: Runs flawlessly at 60 FPS. Occasional input lag with touch interface.
Buy if: You want a dose of pure 90s nostalgia or need a history lesson in FPS design.
Skip if: You can't stand virtual joysticks or expect modern shooter mechanics like reloading or vertical aiming.
Available on: iPhone, iPad, iPod
