The 'merge' genre is the new 'match-3,' and Fortress Merge is as generic as they come. It tries to spice things up with tower defense elements, but both halves of the game are underdeveloped. The merge part is just a tedious way to upgrade your units, and the tower defense part is largely automated. You don't actually 'play' the game so much as you manage a series of menus. The difficulty spikes are clearly designed to push you toward the cash shop for power-ups. It’s a cynical piece of software that prioritizes engagement metrics over actual fun. The art style is that generic 'clash of clones' fantasy look that I’m tired of seeing. If you've played one merge game, you've played this. There’s no soul here, just a collection of systems meant to keep you scrolling.
