Dinsun here. Shovel Pirate is a breath of fresh air because it actually feels like a game. It has a beginning, an end, and mechanics that require a bit of coordination. The 8-bit art isn't just a lazy filter; it’s well-drawn and reminds me of the better Game Boy Color titles. The shovel mechanic is simple but effective—you dig, you bash, you move on.
It’s short, though. Fifteen levels go by in a flash, and while there are secrets to find, there’s not much reason to go back once you’ve cleared them. It doesn't do anything new, but it does the old things well. For a few bucks, you get a honest-to-goodness platformer without the 'live service' nonsense that’s poisoning the industry. It’s a bit too easy for my taste, but I can appreciate the craftsmanship. It’s a solid B-minus.
