Good adaptation, some improvements needed
Thu Aug 31 2023 music-meisterThis is, overall, a good adaptation of the Board game. Generally speaking, the AI is a solid opponent. But there are some improvements would be greatly help the game:
1. The board game has been updated with expansions / extra tiles. Seeing those extra tiles added to the app (even as an IAP) would be great.
2. I’ve experienced an odd bug when playing a castle tile. It has to do with playing a tile, wanting to buy a tile for 2 silver and then taking the 2nd action. For some reason, you have to buy the other tile before placing the castle and taking the second action. (Perhaps this is following the rule book, but perhaps it’s a bug?)
3. The expansions also have a lot of different player boards. Only having the original 8 gets old. Adding new boards would be a HUGE improvement to the app.
4. Similar to #3, having more choice over which board to play. Going random is…random. Being able to choose from a couple of different boards would be a nice touch.
Overall, it’s one of my most played board game apps. If you’re on the fence, you should get it. But it hasn’t been updated in quite a while and it could use some TLC to update it with the current releases of the tabletop game (expansions, player boards, etc.)
It’s a good Carpe Diem substitute for iPad
Tue Dec 31 2024 IanMuleI bought this, because I own Feldmans other analog board game, Carpe Diem (Ravensburger). That game isn’t as well known and probably will never become an app, even though it is awesome.
Castles of Bergundy shares similar mechanics, and is considered one of the best board games ever made on BGG. I had never played that board game but wanted to play a game like Carpe Diem on the go. This gives me my fix!
My only complaint is the weird, PowerPoint swoosh that occurs between each player’s turn. I don’t know why, but it looks corny to me and kind of ruins the vibe of the game. Board games don’t have magic portals. Perhaps a fade out and in would work better. But overall, I love this game. Difficult to do well in. I appreciate that. High recommend. 👍
Incredibly Addictive Adaptation of the Classic Boardgame
Mon Mar 18 2019 drengyCastles of Burgundy is an all-time great boardgame, and this adaptation does it justice. Great asynchronous play - I’m currently playing games with folks from all over the place and it’s really smooth. If you’re used to the boardgame layout, it may take you a game or two to get your bearings, but once you do you’ll appreciate how the developers laid things out to work surprisingly well on a phone-sized screen.
Do yourself a favor though and change the animation speed to fast, and turn-off replay in the games list if you want to play your turn as quickly as possible.
P.S. It had some bad bugs when it first came out, but most of them are fixed now - you can buy with confidence.
Forced forfeit bug!
Mon Dec 20 2021 HalhahalEdit: bug persists throughout several of the past few updates. Why is this bug so hard to fix? I estimate that I’ve lost 30-40 games because of this bug, and my ranking has suffered greatly through no fault of my own. I currently have a game live that has been sitting in my games list for several months as neither my opponent nor I have taken action on it.
Developers please fix the bug that causes the game to get hung after one of my opponents is timed out and forced forfeit by my other opponent. At this point it’s my turn but going into the game, it never progresses to my turn, stays on “waiting for opponent”. This results in my turn also timing out and my opponent also forcing me to forfeit. Very frustrating in ranked games, had this happen 4-5 times in the past couple months, submitted several bug reports from the game, but it’s still not fixed, nor have I gotten any response. 🧐
Scoring Tile Error
Tue Aug 18 2020 yo_peejDeveloper, please fix the yellow knowledge tile (I believe it’s #7?) that scores each time an animal tile is scored. Friends and I have noticed that it gives a mystery extra point each time it is activated, on TOP of the points it already gives. For example, if I add a 2 cow tile to a pasture with two other 2-cow tiles, it will correctly add the cows (6), correctly give 3 knowledge points for the 3 tiles scoring, and then incorrectly add a mystery point for a total of 10 when it should be 9.
This app is great overall, though! Have played it with friends now dozens of times.
Super fun game
Wed Mar 13 2019 jilehaIt is so much fun to play that it doesn’t really matter whether I win or lose.
One tip: If the game freezes, as it still sometimes does, access the menu via the button in the right top corner and select ypur current game in the lists of active games. The game will reload and open right before your last turn during which it froze.
Update March 13: All of a sudden, I can’t play anymore. “network error”, “client needs to be updated for online game” - but I only play against the AI. My network is fine. Play runs until after I placed the first card. Then the error message pops up. I checked for an update, there actually was one, but after the update still the same.
Animations way too slow, let us disable them please
Mon Mar 20 2023 ShawnZzzzzzzzThis is a great game, I don’t want to diminish that.
However in a two human player (2 human + 1 AI) game the animations waste 15 minutes of total time for a single game! That’s being generous as I am undercounting and rounding to the nearest 5 minutes. That’s with the game speed set to the highest and also on an iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 14 pro max (not old or slow devices).
From the first player to the last player is more than 10 seconds waiting for the animations and watching the replay. From the last player back to the first player is well over 30 seconds of animations of switching maps, showing die rolls, and watching replays. Sadly, 40 seconds of watching animations multiplied by the 25 turns there are in the game really add up!
Amazing game but with human players it just takes too long. We haven’t encountered any defects or any glitches that caused us to lose any games either. The problem is it’s not much faster than playing the physical board game.
All we are asking for is a way to disable animations and replays. If I really need to know what the other players did I can just look at their board.
Bugs, odd art, poor AI for a great strategy game.
Fri Sep 13 2019 icelusx+ Great strategy game based off of board game
+ Added character art looks good as does the map
+ great potential
Huge, game breaking bugs.
- I close my iPad lid and the game I’ve been playing for the last 30 minutes is gone.
- I purchased the second mine tile in the game at some point I undo. That tile is no longer in the game. AI doesn’t have it, I don’t have it. Game breaker.
- I’ve watched as the AI take two turns in a row twice now. Took a boat, placed boat, rerolled and then went again! Come on! I’ve never seen bugs this bad.
- the menu ui/ux is terrible. I found that you can speed up gameplay after hours of play. How do I change my player color? They should start over by copying the ui of an app that works or hire a ux designer so everything is intuitive.
- Where does the steam punk iris diaphragm come in? This is a run away design team, where is the art director or project manager here? The 3D buildings were a cool idea but the rest of the ui is so weird and with lots of wasted space.
- after a knowledge tile is built it looks weird. What is that supposed to be exactly and why not just keep the art so I can reference it there? In an effort to “declutter” you added an additional space for each knowledge tile...
Too buggy for the high price
Sat Apr 27 2024 WRS15743I regret buying this game. The tutorial froze multiple times at the exact same spot, so I couldn’t finish it. So I read the rules and watched videos. The game is complicated, but I figured it out enough to play a few times against AI.
There were times I should have been able to place a certain tile, but it wouldn’t let me, even though I knew I should be able to. But because there is zero feedback or pop-ups telling you why you can or can’t do something, you’re stuck with a bad tile you can’t place, with no reason why.
I really wanted to like this game, and the actual physical game is surely fine. But at $8.99 I expected a better user experience. I can’t recommend it, especially to a new player.
Fantastic adaptation of a great board game
Mon Jul 20 2020 JDSamuraiI put off buying this game due to the bad reviews, but I finally took the plunge because the game itself is great. 10 games or so in, no bugs, no crashes, decent-ish AI. I’m thinking the dev team has fixed any previous issues and likely having a newer iPad with a lot of memory helps too.
The graphics look sharp and the interface is intuitive after a few plays (there are a lot of actions you can take.)
I haven’t played online yet, so I can’t speak to that.
