89/100

Dungeon Village is a delightful subversion of the standard RPG formula. Instead of playing the hero, you play the town manager who must attract heroes to your village. It’s an incredibly addictive loop: build a combat school, a hero visits and trains, they go out and kill monsters, they spend their loot in your shops, and you use that money to build a better town. Kairosoft has mastered the 'one more minute' style of gameplay.

The charm lies in watching your town grow from a small hamlet into a sprawling adventurer's hub. Naming your heroes and equipping them with legendary gear you've found on quests adds a personal layer to the management. While the graphics are the signature Kairosoft 8-bit style, the depth of the simulation is impressive. Managing the town's popularity while ensuring your heroes are strong enough to take on the latest dragon threat is a balancing act that never stops being fun.

Dinsun Review

Kairosoft is the master of the 'just five more minutes' loop, and Dungeon Village is one of their most dangerous traps. Watching your little pixel warriors buy a better sword from the shop you built and then go kick a slime's teeth in is satisfying in a very basic way. It scratches that management itch without requiring you to actually think too hard. For a few hours, it’s pure, distilled dopamine.

But here’s where my conservative side kicks in: it’s barely a game. Once you realize the 'RPG' elements are just math problems moving in straight lines, the magic fades. There is no story, no strategy beyond 'place building A near building B,' and the late-game becomes a tedious exercise in micromanaging medals for ungrateful heroes. It’s a pleasant distraction for a flight, but don’t expect any lasting substance. It’s Kairosoft by numbers.
