Florence is not just a game; it is a profound emotional experience that uses mobile interaction to tell a story better than a film or book ever could. It follows Florence Yeoh as she experiences the highs and lows of her first major relationship with a cello player named Krish. What makes it genius is how the mini-games act as metaphors for her emotional state.
For example, at the start of the relationship, speech bubbles are complex puzzles because flirting is hard. As they get to know each other, the puzzles become simpler—conversations just flow. When they fight, the puzzles become sharp and aggressive. It’s a short experience, lasting about 45 minutes, but it lingers in your mind for days. It is an intimate, beautiful, and heartbreaking 'slice of life' that everyone should play at least once.
Florence is an interesting piece of software, though calling it a 'game' feels like a bit of a stretch for someone with my background. It uses very basic mechanics—shaking a polaroid, moving boxes, solving simple puzzles—to tell a grounded, human story. The way the puzzle pieces for dialogue become easier as the characters get comfortable is a brilliant use of the medium. It’s short, poignant, and clearly crafted with care.
That said, as a gamer who looks for systems to master, Florence offers very little in the way of traditional engagement. You are essentially a passenger on a fixed track. While I respect the artistry and the avoidance of typical mobile tropes, it’s a 'one-and-done' experience that lasts less than an hour. It’s worth the time for the story, but don’t expect any mechanical depth here.
Performance: Smooth transitions; no technical issues observed.
Buy if: You prioritize emotional storytelling and unique art over mechanical challenge.
Skip if: You want a game with deep systems, high difficulty, or long-term engagement.
Available on: iPhone, iPad, iPod

During dialogue scenes, you'll solve small jigsaw puzzles to form speech bubbles. The speed and ease with which you solve them reflect how comfortable the characters are with each other. Don't rush; let the story and music set the pace.
Let's just get this out of the way: Florence is one of the most beautiful, unforgettable games I have ever played.
