The Gardens Between is a stunningly beautiful, poignant journey through memory and friendship. It’s a puzzle game where you don’t control the characters directly; instead, you manipulate time itself. By flowing time forward and backward, you influence how Arina and Frendt interact with the surreal, dream-like islands they inhabit. Each island is a vibrant diorama constructed from oversized childhood objects—vCRs, popcorn tins, and game consoles—that tell the wordless story of their relationship.
The puzzles are brilliantly designed, often requiring you to pay close attention to small environmental changes that occur as time shifts. There’s a wonderful sense of discovery when you realize how a single action in the past affects the future path. The visuals are breathtakingly artistic, and the ambient soundtrack perfectly captures the bittersweet nostalgia of growing up. It’s a short, polished experience that feels more like an interactive poem than a traditional game. It’s one of the most emotionally resonant and visually striking titles available on mobile, and it’s an absolute must-play.
This is a rare case where the 'art game' label isn't just an excuse for lack of gameplay. The time-scrubbing mechanic is incredibly clever. It forces you to look at the environment not as a series of obstacles, but as a timeline you have to synchronize. It's elegant in a way most mobile games never even attempt.
I’m usually a bit cynical about these types of emotional narratives, but the way the world-building happens through the objects on the islands—old VCRs, game consoles, bike parts—really struck a chord with me. It’s a short experience, yes, but it’s dense with quality. It’s one of the few games on the App Store that I would actually call a must-play for anyone who appreciates thoughtful design.
