Everybody Shogi is a revelation for anyone who has ever wanted to learn Shogi but felt overwhelmed by the kanji characters and complex rules. By using intuitive iconography and a bright, modern color palette, the developers have stripped away the barrier to entry while keeping the strategic core perfectly intact.
The progression system is brilliant. Instead of forcing you to play a full game immediately, it gives you 'Mate-in-1' or 'Mate-in-3' puzzles that feel more like a casual brain teaser than a grueling mental exercise. This approach builds your pattern recognition naturally, making the transition to full PvP matches feel much smoother.
Technically, the game is flawless. The cross-play between iPhone and Mac works seamlessly, and the lack of ads makes for a focused, high-end experience. Whether you're looking for a serious competitive outlet or just a smart way to pass the time, this game belongs on your device.
Dinsun here. I’ve seen enough flashy 'modern' takes on classics to appreciate when a developer just sticks to the game. Everybody Shogi doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it just gives you a solid board and an AI that doesn't feel like it's cheating or falling over. The 20 levels of difficulty are legitimate—I found the middle ground challenging enough for a daily session, and the higher tiers will humble anyone who thinks they've mastered the strategy. It’s clean and functional, which is more than I can say for most apps these days.
However, it’s a bit too sterile for some. There's a lack of online matchmaking which, in 2026, feels like a missed opportunity for a game that thrives on human competition. The interface is 'traditional,' which is code for 'looks like it was designed a decade ago,' but for a purist like me, that’s almost a positive. It does exactly what it says on the tin: it lets you play Shogi. No loot boxes, no daily login rewards—just the game. If you can handle the isolation of local play, it’s a competent tool for your collection.
Performance: Solid 60fps; AI calculations are quick even on older hardware; zero crashes reported.
Buy if: You are a purist looking for a serious Shogi practice tool with a strong offline AI.
Skip if: You require online competitive play or modern high-fidelity graphics to enjoy a board game.
Available on: Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, iPod
