I grew up on real arcade games, and let me tell you, Gold Miner Joe isn't a 'tribute'—it’s just dated. The touch controls for a platformer are always a gamble, and here they are a losing bet. Joe moves like he’s waist-deep in molasses, and the hitboxes are as generous as a starving lion. I lost more lives to 'phantom' touches than I did to actual obstacles.

The art style is trying for 'nostalgic' but lands on 'cheap.' There’s no charm in the enemy designs, and the music loop will have you reaching for the mute button within five minutes. It’s a repetitive slog through brown caves that offers none of the tight design found in the classics it tries to mimic. It’s an arcade game without the 'wow' factor that made us pump quarters into machines in the first place.
